5 Reasons Why You Should Shop
at a Farmers Market
Do you like tasty and fresh foods? The best places to find these foods are at your local farmers market.
1. Flavor, flavor and more flavor!
Farmers market fruits and vegetables are allowed to ripen completely, therefore, you can find the produce more flavorful. Once they are harvested, the produce is off to the farmers market and in your hands.
2. In Season!
One of the best things about your local farmers market is that foods selection is picked from seasonal items. When in season, fresh fruit and vegetables reach their true potential for flavor. Purchasing new fruits, vegetables, or spices may also allow you to explore new food items and recipes.
3. Nutrition at its finest.
Local, fresh and in season fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices mean that these foods will be more nutritious. Fruits and vegetables lose some of their nutritional value while they await their long trip from the farm, to the grocer and finally to your kitchen. Other common practices amongst many farmers whom provide produce to large grocery stores include: using pesticides, antibiotics, hormones, waxes (makes fruit shiny), or are irradiated.
4. Food origin?
Have you ever read food labels and realized that your avocados come from a country thousands of miles away? Fresh? I think not! By purchasing local items you will know exactly where your food comes from, usually from a farm just a few miles away. Quite often, the individuals selling you the produce are the farmers themselves. Not only can you get to know your food vendors, you are supporting family-owned farms.
5. Save Mother Nature!
According to the latest statistics, food in the United States travels between 1,500 to 2,500 miles by the time it reaches your kitchen. This means burning more fuel, pollution, and extra packaging is needed to insure that the food items maintain looking “fresh”. Foods that are found at the farmers market typically do not travel more than 100 miles.
